What Is an Amalgam Filling?

The word “amalgam” refers to a mixture or blend or a combination. Here, a dental amalgam filling refers to a blend of several metals to restore the lost tooth structure. The dentist removes the decayed part of the tooth and fills the area with an amalgam filling, which creates a strong, stable replacement for the lost tooth structure.

Dental amalgam is a mixture of mercury and a blend of silver, tin, and copper which are used in dentistry for over 150 years. A half composition of dental amalgam consists of elemental mercury in which copper/ silver/ tin alloy particles react and bind together making it effective at filling cavities.

Benefits of Amalgam Filling

  • Amalgam fillings are a cost-effective solution to fill a cavity. They are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and thus preventing future oral complications.
  • They can withstand chewing pressure and are more resistant to cavities when compared to a composite filling.
  • They are durable and last for a longer period with proper care.

Is an Amalgam Filling Safe?

There are many concerns raised regarding the safety of dental material used in an amalgam filling. Mercury content may cause toxicity to the brain and kidneys at higher levels.

But there is no scientific evidence that shows mercury released from the amalgam affects the general health of a person. Hence, amalgam filling is safe for adults and children 6 years old and older. The unique properties of mercury make the dental amalgam more durable and strong.

Care For Amalgam Filling

Due to a metallic makeup of an amalgam filling, they are durable and last for a long period with proper oral care. They are the superior choice for treating larger tooth decay.

  • Follow good oral hygiene practice without skipping
  • Visit a dentist for routine cleaning
  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss everyday
  • Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash daily
  • Avoid extremely hot or cold foods
  • Be mindful of what we eat
  • Seek help from the dentist at the earliest if you notice a crack or leak in the filling
  • If you notice unusual signs of tooth sensitivity, take dental X-rays to assess the situation
